autocross

FAQ for Beginners

Do I need a helmet?

Yes, but you don’t have to buy one. You can borrow one of ours.

Boston BMW has many loaner helmets from size S to XL. You can borrow one for the day.

I don’t own a sports car / my car isn’t fast / my car is really old. What am I supposed to drive in autocross?

Bring whatever car you have. You can drive almost anything at autocross.

There are some exceptions, like SUV’s, trucks and a few other models prone to tipping. You can ask us if you’re unsure. In general, you can bring any car you have to autocross. We’ve seen a Chevy Bolt, a Nissan Maxima and a Crown Victoria. It doesn’t have to be fast or new or be a BMW. It just has to be safe to drive, which means nothing is leaking and nothing is loose in the engine compartment.

Can I do this if I have no experience?

Yes, definitely.

We’re here to help you. Novices are always welcome. We’ll explain the rules at the beginning of the event, an instructor will take all novices on a walk through the course to explain how to drive through the elements, and an instructor will be in your car on every run in the morning. We’ll show you how to get the hang of this.

How much does it cost?

The price of a one year BMW membership, which is $58, plus $60 for every autocross event you attend. Special events, like schools, cost more than $60. Every event is optional. Attend as many as you want.

Do I have to do anything special to my car to get ready for autocross?

No special preparation is required.

We will do a tech inspection on your car when you get to the event. Read this page to learn what they will be checking during the inspection.
