On Saturday, December 1st, North Shore Motor Werks in Peabody, MA hosted the chapter for an Undercarriage Tech Session. Owner and master BMW technician James Hart (also a Marine veteran) was there with two staff members providing refreshment along with their advice.
Likely due to it being one of the few weekends left before Christmas, attendance was light.
The day before my E39 developed a severe high-speed front end vibration, so I limped in hoping that I could find out what the issue was and either leave my ’02 540i or come back on Monday.
After I briefly described the problem, James hit the front rotors with his infrared thermometer laser which showed a huge variation in temps; he knew right away that the issue was a frozen caliper. Although this was just a Tech Session and NSMW is closed on weekends, he ordered a replacement which was delivered promptly, and with the help of his staff proceeded to install it, bleed the system and test drive the car to make sure it was 100%. He delivered this extraordinary service with a smile and constant patter explaining everything he was doing.
At the end, he was more than fair with the bill even though I asked him to charge me his normal rates. Though many businesses have slogans, James’ “Service with Integrity” hits the bullseye.
