I recently purchased an E36 M3 for track and daily driving. I'd like to hear peoples thoughts on the Kumho 710s, Victoracers, Hoosier R6, and Nitto Nt01s. I know BMW people tend to favor the RA-1s but I am wondering about the collective experience with other brands. I'm purchasing a track set of wheels and tires. My street tire is the Falken RT-615 which I highly recommend for OEM replacement. Interested in your thoughts.

BTW, I've been looking at sizing and plan to move to the same size tire all the way around. I'm having the front fenders rolled to accomodate 255/40/17s on 8.5" wheels. It appears the OEM 245/40/17 is as rare as hen's teeth in racing rubber. The Hoosier R6 does come in this size but I've been warned it wears very fast. The alternative is moving to 235/40/70 or 255/40/7.

I intend to use the set for HPDE and time trials. I usually run in the red run grps. I've been tracking various cars for about 8yrs and even attended Skips racing school. This will be my first real set of race rubber!!!!

What tire you get....even for dedicated track tires will depend on how many days a year you plan to run and what your budget is.  If you were competing in time trials or other track events, I'd suggest the R6's and expect to get perhaps 7 days out of a set.  Victoracers are far cheaper and also way less sticky, but you might get 7 weekends out of a set of these.  On the farther outside end are tires like Kumho MX.  I run these all the time on my Subaru.  They are fine on the track....not as sticky as real R rubber but you can run on the street.  If I get 2 years street/track out of them, I'll be more than happy.

If you are mainly looking for good tires that won't fall apart on the track, the MX's are fine and not overly picky.  I would suggest putting some miles on them on the street first as full tread depth tires can tend to chunk if you put them on the car and go directly to the track.

Tread type is another factor if you go to all out track rubber.  What'll you run in the rain?  Again, something like these MX's have tread (unlike an R6) so you could run in a rain event with no trouble.

A Kumho Ecsta V700 (step up a bit from the victoracer) has tread and would be more sticky than the MX.  I run those as rains on my racecar (Hoosiers in the dry).

Oh......re-reading your post.....when considering tire size.....tires in a particular numerical size will vary DRAMATICALLY from one tire to another.  I stack my 225 wide hoosiers next to my 225 wide Kumhos.  The 4 Hoosiers are a good 4 inches higher (an inch a tire).  It's one of the tricks that tire companies do to stay competitive.  Throw some extra width but don't name it that way.  Hoosier does have a width spec on its site.  Some of the others do as well.  Be sure if you are not sure if they'll fit or not.

Good luck with your choice,

jack
