Hi Mike,

This is probably the 1,000th time you have fielded a question like this, but I was wondering what oil you recommend for an E36 M3 in the summer, daily driver as well as track car. I am guessing that the 5W30 is too light. A mechanic during a recent undercarriage inspection suggested BMW's 5W60. Of course, I use a synthetic. I was thinking Red Line 10W40 might be good but was wondering what you would recommend.

Thanks!

Steve

I run either Castrol 5w50 or Elf 10w50 synthetic in my MCoupe. I don't think that the Castrol 10w60 is necessary although it certainly will work fine.

I was told recently that Royal Purple was great at quieting that pesky lifter noise. Any truth to whether one oil is better than another for lifter noise?

Lifter noise is common among high mileage cars, cars driven infrequently, or cars w/ extended oil service intervals. Usually, there is some gunk w/in the lifter that alters its ability to pump up & stay that way.

We've had good luck adding 1/2 a quart of mystery oil and running it through one oil service cycle (about 5000 miles). Usually the lifters quiet w/in a minute or 2 after the first start up & gradually the noise disappears upon start up altogether.

Good luck!

How about winter months, what oil grade should I use?

Is there one grade that is suitable for year round use?  My M3 is not tracked; its my daily spirited  driver.

During the dead of winter (Jan -Feb) when it goes below zero I would run a 10w30 synthetic. For all other times of the year 10w50.
