To anyone who can help,

I have a '93 318is and last fall before I put it away for the winter had an instrument cluster failure where all gauges on the dash with a needle stopped working. All idiot lights are still operational but that makes sense when looking at the electrical diagram, they are totally independently wired. I have checked every fuse that I can find because their sudden failure would lead me to believe that it is a fuse however I have pulled and checked them all.

Even though my car has 208k+ miles on it, I have no problem buying a used instrument cluster on ebay and swapping it out but before I did I wanted to make sure that it was not another problem which could mask itself as an instrument failure.

Failure of instrument cluster occurred while changing lanes at highway speeds in the rain on rt. 90. I was hoping that when taking it out of storage this spring it would have healed over the winter but that was not the case.

Does anyone have any E36 instrument failure stories or knowledge that they can share?

Thanks

Okay,

I replaced the instrument cluster with one from a parts yard in RI that i found through car-part.com. Everything came alive again so i guess that was the problem. The only problem now is that i have 144k on my odometer and not the 208k+ that i had on the one I removed. Some people may not view that as a problem! I know there is some RMV form to fill out when your odometer has been changed in some way or another BUT, it is a digital odometer and the service manual alludes to being able to program it at the dealer.

First, is is possible for the odometer to be manually set to any given mileage by a dealer (or someone with the right tool)? Second, if it is possible, it is worth my money to have it done (how much would it cost?) because I think I'd rather pay money than go to any RMV.

I believe that the higher mileage can be programmed into the new cluster. Mileage is also stored externally of the instrument cluster in the car. When the Instrument cluster & the externally stored mileages don't agree, a red dot will illuminate above the mileage counter in the cluster. A dealer or shop w/ a GT1 diagnostic computer can go in and select to have the higher of the two mileages displayed. Then the red dot will go out.

Good luck!
