| | I just picked up a Miata with a SCCA Solo 1 double diagonal rated roll bar, OEM hard top, and 5 point harnesses for both driver & passenger. I plan to use this for BMWCCA DE's, but will have to lower or replace the OEM drivers seat to get helmet clearance below the roof. Will I need to replace the passenger seat with an identical unit to pass Tech Inspection? |

| | The convertible rules are in the Driving School Event Description: http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/EventDescription/2008/DrivingSchools.aspx You should have your car checked by the registrar before you attend and I suggest you e-mail him with plenty of lead time. Unless the OEM Miata seat allows proper anti-sub belt mounting through a grommet by your crotch (and not around the front of the seat), you will need to change seats for both driver and passenger (and you'd want to anyway). You will also need to clear both your head and your instructor's so lower seats would fix both problems. We may need to find you an instructor on the short side, but this isn't a problem (I'm 5'8" for example, and we have even more height-challenged instructors.) I believe we would allow an OEM seat and a race seat, if identical belts could be PROPERLY installed on both. This would rarely be the case as most 5+ point belts can't be properly installed in an OEM seat and even 4-points can't be installed in some OEM seats. Make sure your belts are not expired. That's 12/31 on the year indicated on an FIA belt or 2 years from the month of manufacture for an SFI belt. If you buy new belts, I recommend FIA so that they will be valid longer. A trip to HMS Motorsports in Danvers, MA would probably be helpful. They could look at your car, your seats, your belts, and your roll bar. If you go when Joe Marko (the owner, also a Boston Chapter Driving School co-chair) is there, he could give you a definitive answer on your setup. |

| | Thanks Dan. The plan for the car is a couple of months of street only while I work out the kinks, then get it to the track in the fall. I planned on going to HMS to check out seats anyway. I'll check with Joe prior to heading up. |
