I have a fairly loud engine ticking noise most of the time in my 2007 328cic. I have listened to a friend's 2007 528 and heard it as well. Dealership says it is normal, due to the vanos. Is it?

Ticking noises on forums are hard to hear.

We haven't heard too many VANOS units tick on these engines. I would evaluate the serpentine belt idler pulleys & the power steering pump. Your mechanic should be using a stethoscope w/ a long hollow needle end to isolate the tick, otherwise the sound reflects about in the engine bay making it appear like it's coming from everywhere.
