Your transmission seems to be a problematic one relative to failure. Depending on what the fluid looks like, it's quite possible that the torque converter or even the transmission may need to be replaced. You might be lucky & it may just be the seal you speak of. I would trust your dealer's recommendations for repair. Some dealers & independents are capable of extensive internal repairs to these gearboxes, but it requires a lot of expertise & special tooling, sort of the difference between a general surgeon vs. a neurosurgeon.

If the gearbox fluid is full of metal, the entire trans needs to be disassembled inspected & cleaned. Given the work & liability at stake, most shops will recommend a new gearbox at that point.

I know this info isn't too specific, but until the gearbox is out of the car it's hard to make a diagnosis.

Auto Trans Leak with Code P0741

I've a 2001 330CIC, 70000 miles, with the ZF5HP19 auto trans. Though the car drives fine, it posts a P0741 OBD code, which I found means the torque converter clutch is not locking up, and I am getting a small transmission fluid leak. I haven't crawled under the car yet to tell exactly where on the trans it is leaking from, but from all I have found in researching this, I believe it has failure symptoms of the seal between the Torque Converter and main case.

I will probably be bringing it to the dealer for repair next week, but first some questions:

Is this a common failure?
Is the BMW dealer best equipped to handle this?
Is this just a seal replacement (and probably an expensive one at that) or should other part replacement and other service be performed on the trans while it is removed?

Any advice appreciated.
