When my wife moved here from Germany, we bought a 2003 E39 525 sport package car since she felt there was no reason to drive a fast car in the USA.   The one she had in Germany was a direct injection diesel.  The gas car was very light on what is needed in the US, torque.  After a year of driving, we saw the first E60 5 series cars and were appalled at what Bangle had done to these terrific cars.  When we took the 525 in for the 12 month service, there was a carbon black E39 M5 with very low miles sitting in the showroom.  We traded the 525 on the spot and took home the M5.   It is very quick and a thrill to drive.    The dealer put in the heavy duty clutch upgrade before we took delivery.  So far, no clutch problems at all.  Brakes and rotors were replaced once also.

Can you say TORQUE?   You can start in 2nd, skip shift all day long, smoke the tires or just cruise along.  It gets major attention in traffic all the time.   The valet guys still park it in the front spot.  It now has over 70,000 miles on it.  I did the 60,000 service on it myself in one afternoon.   There is a lot of information on these cars on the internet.   The original tires lasted about 25,000 miles in spite of showing off with a lot of donuts and smoky burnouts.  The second set are the new stickier Dunlops that seem to make it a lot harder to spin the tires and show off, but much easier to launch quickly.  We put 4 snow tires on it in the winter and drive it all the time without a problem.

I recomend changing the exhaust.  I bought my wife a Sebring race exhaust and x-pipe for Christmas.   It makes the M5 sound very exotic and is well worth the effort.  For modification stuff to make it more track worthy, try this site.  http://www.beastpower.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=BMI

We play with this car on the street a lot and have done a few test and tune AX days with it for fun.  I have had students who run these at DE and love them.  We do not take ours to DE since we have a very modified M3 for that.
