I replaced the front rotors myself a week ago. Since then I noticed a metallic clicking from the driver's side intermitently that goes away under braking. I pulled the wheel and noticed the pad adjacent to the piston (inside) is somewhat loose. I'm sure that is where the sound is coming from. The passenger side are snug. Is the caliper piston stuck? The braking feels fine, no problems no pulling. I went a head and bled the caliper, no difference. The caliper is supposed to float on sliders. Could that be the problem? Is the piston somehow not advancing as the pad wears? Any ideas?

There are (supposed to be) 3 prongs (spring clips) on the back of the brake pad that is mounted to the caliper piston itself. If all three prongs are still there, then tweak them a little so that the pad fits snug into the caliper piston. If one or all of of the prongs are missing, bummer, you'll need to get another set of pads. The clicking noise you hear is the pad being lifted by the rotor and then falling back when it encounters the carrier. This spring clip is altogether missing on many of the track race pads.

Mike,

Tx for reply. Are you talking about the spring on the BMW pad carrier? The pads are race pads but the other side doesn't bang around and prior to replacing the rotors these pads were fine (albeit noisy)

I'm talking about the spring clip on the brake pad backing plate. One pad is mounted inboard on the caliper piston using the 3 prong spring clip that is attached to the backing plate, the other has no clip & so mounts on the outboard side. Race pads usually have no clips at all & either pad can be mounted anywhere. The pads will however click & clack & rattle around. Variations in backing plate tolerances will have some pads be more noisy than others. Here's a photo of stock pads w/ clips.

OK I gues I was just lucky they didn't click before. These pads have no springs. Boy quite annoying. How about some of that antisqueal stuff? I didn't use it for fear of fire.

I guess you could try anti squeal, I can't say that we've ever used it on track pads. How about a set of street rotors & pads and another set for exclusively for the track. Track pads usually don't work so well on the street because they rarely get to operating temp anyway.
